The Facts About Hard Water

What is hard water? It's water that contains a higher concentration of minerals than what is considered normal. It is common with well water because water is required to percolate through the bedrock before making its way to your home. Water "hardness" is categorized according to the number of grains per gallon of rock or minerals as follows:

  • 1 to 3.5 grains per gallon = moderate to hard
  • 3.5 to 7 grains per gallon = hard water
  • 7 to 10.5 grains per gallon = very hard water
  • 10.5 grains per gallon and above = extremely hard water

Considering that a family of four consumes about 10,000 gallons of water a month, if they are consuming water at a hardness level of only 7 grains per gallon, that's still a whopping 10 pounds of dissolved rock coming into the home every month!

Hard water makes it more difficult to get things clean including dishes, clothing, floors, countertops, and you. What's more, lime build-up in both electric and gas water heaters makes them work a lot harder than they should, which can ratchet your water heating costs up by 70%.

Investing in a home water softening system can reduce these costs and inconveniences dramatically, and offer the added benefit of stimulating biological action in your septic system, so it works more efficiently as well.
